obesity

Pronunciation oh-BEE-sih-tee
Definition A condition characterized by an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity can be determined by calculating the body mass index (BMI). (BMI is a number that estimates the amount of body fat on a person, based on his or her weight and height. It is calculated by multiplying weight [in pounds] by 703, dividing the answer by height [in inches] and dividing that answer by height [in inches]). In adults, a BMI of 30 or higher indicates obesity. Some people, such as bodybuilders or other athletes with a lot of muscle, can be overweight without being obese. See: overweight.
