Description
This map shows the spatial distribution of the nation’s
forest land in 2002
as a percentage of county land area. Nationwide, 37 percent (749 million acres)
of all land is forest land.
Use this map only to identify broad spatial trends. At the
time of
assessment, data were not available for interior Alaska,
the Pacific Basin, Puerto
Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and a small number of counties
in the lower 48 states.

Definitions:
Forest land is defined as land at least 10 percent stocked by forest
trees of any size, or formerly having such tree cover, and not currently
developed for non-forest uses, with a minimum area classification
of 1 acre.
