NPS HALE - AmeriCorps

Position Description
AmeriCorps is a program designed for 18-26 year olds and is found all across the U.S. There are part-time or full-time year-round positions and part-time or full-time summer positions. Participants receive an educational award based on the number of hours of service they perform. This award can go towards future tuition/books or pay off existing student loans. This program is run through MEO Youth Bank on Maui. The link to their website is found below.

NO HOUSING is available. A living expense is provided by the Americorps program. You must have reliable transportation to 7000'. Car pool options are possible.

NPS HALE - Master Volunteer (HI RESIDENTS ONLY)

Position Description
Master Volunteers are individuals who agree to provide a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer service (up front) to the park during the course of one year. They can have either general or specialized skills. There is no age requirement, though most projects available to reach 500 hours are appropriate for 15 year olds and up. The 500 hours can be reached by volunteering 10 hours a week, 1 week a month, consolidated into full-time for 12 weeks or other variations. Positions are available in interpretation, maintenance, resource management and administration. Experience supervising others REQUIRED. YOU MUST LIST YOUR SPECIFIC EXPERIENCES. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

NPS HALE - Endangered Species Technician

Haleakala is home to many threatened or endangered endemic species. Work will include monitoring predator traplines, monitoring endangered bird species for nesting activitiy and production of young; computer data entry and other activities. A full-time committment for a minimum of 3 months is required. Must have at least 2 years education leading to a Biology or Wildlife biology degree. YOU MUST LIST YOUR SPECIFIC EXPERIENCES. NPS Lockhouse 8 River Center Docent
C&O Canal National Historical Park (Potomac, MD)

Position Description
LOCKHOUSE DOCENTS: Volunteer at the Potomac Conservancy River Center! The Conservancy is looking for river history buffs to help maintain and staff the River Center at historic Lockhouse 8 on the C&O Canal NHP. This year, the River Center will feature a new exhibit, Backyard to the Bay, which will educate visitors about the Potomac River, its connection to the Chesapeake Bay, and what they can do in their own backyards to protect these resources. Volunteer lockkeepers will work in teams of two to provide information to visitors to the C&O Canal National Historical Park, and promote the activities and programs of the Potomac Conservancy. Volunteers may also lead occasional education programs for small groups and will be responsible for maintainting the public areas in and around the Lockhouse. Docents must schedule an orientation meeting, and must be at least 18 years old. The first orientation is scheduled for April 28, 2007. FWS Fisheries General Assistance
Green Lake National Fish Hatchery (Ellsworth, ME)
Location: Ellsworth, ME 04605
Position Description
Location Description: Green Lake National Fish Hatchery is located in Ellsworth, Maine, less than an hour from Acadia National Park and is a restoration and ESA hatchery, raising endangered Atlantic salmon for restoration. The hatchery employs a full-time staff of eight and looks to recruit a volunteer to assist with busy seasons and basic hatchery work. Spring and fall are particularly busy times at Green Lake NFH. Position Description: Volunteers interested in fish culture and biology, facility maintenance, and the Gulf of Maine Atlantic salmon program would be especially interested in this position. Depending upon the season, duties may include assisting with hatching, rearing and distributing Atlantic salmon; assisting with daily cleaning of rearing tanks and preparing them for fish; helping to complete facility maintenance projects.

Unfortunately housing is not available for this position. We do offer an RV hookup (sewer/power/water) for any qualified individual.

FWS Biology Internship
Alaska Peninsula/Becharof NWR (King Salmon, AK)

Position Description
This is a great opportunity for student biologists to get a variety of experience including working in remote landscapes. Abundant wildlife and fish, breath-taking landscapes, wild country! A successful intern will leave with excellent skills, improved resume, and references for career advancement. Early May: crew will attend safety and biological training and prepare gear/supplies for field trips. Late May/June: assist experienced biologist with waterfowl, shorebird or landbird aerial or remote ground-based surveys. July: assist experienced biologists with vegetation, invertebrate and incidental bird and mammal surveys at remote locations mostly around Becharof Lake. Late July/early August may include aerial surveys or ground based work with tundra swan. Other surveys may be added as time allows. Data entry and gear maintenance will be an ongoing assignment when crews are not remote. To Qualify you must be available NLT 11 May, have a college degree or junior/senior standing in wildlife or biology program, some knowledge of visual bird identification, some knowledge of plant survey methods and identification, use IBM-PC software, be in excellent physical condition, and be able to get along in a remote, no-amenities field camp. Initial training (bear safety/firearm safety/cold water safety/aircraft safety) is mandatory; necessary field equipment is provided. Benefits include airfare from a US city, lodging, and food while in the field OR $25 / day for food while in King Salmon. NPS Internship - Natural Resource Management
Stones River National Battlefield (Murfreesboro, TN)

Position Description
The participant assists with vegetation and wildlife management at Stones River National Battlefield. Duties may include establishing native plant species, management of invasive exotic species, and monitoring of rare and endangered species. Interns will collect and organizes field data and make field observations of natural resource conditions. Participants will learn to use GIS technology to map and organize scientific data. He/she will assist in the preparation of reports, plans, and guidelines. If desired, participants will also receive training and experience in interpreting the park's natural resources to the public using a variety of media and techniques.

Position Description
Wildlife/Fish Management: Volunteers would be exposed to a variety of activities depending on skills and work time frames. These activities including the monitoring of northern goshawks, Townsend's big-eared bats, neo-tropical birds, and flammulated owls; conducting snowshoe hare pellet counts; construction of riparian log-fences; and utilizing GPS equipment to collect wildlife data. Ability to identify birds is recommended, along with a background or strong interest in wildlife management.

NPS Interpretive Ranger Aid
Ozark National Scenic Riverways (Van Buren, MO)
Location: Van Buren, MO 63965
Position Description
Volunteer will assist the NPS Interpretive Rangers in a variety of programs and projects. Perhaps you would like to lead cave tours through the beautiful Round Spring Caverns? Maybe you are into history? Then get your period clothes on and help visitors experience the 1890s on the Ozark frontier at Alley Mill. Volunteer may staff a visitor information desk and help others find their way to the wonders of the Ozarks. Volunteers can present slide shows on topics of interest in the areas of history (pioneer, pre-columbian or Depression era) or nature. May lead hikes, school programs, both classroom and field trips and help with special events like our annual "Haunting In the Hills" storytelling event.

The work is hard but fun. expect to spend a lot of time outdoors in heat and humidity, with ticks and mosquitoes. You will find it worth it though, you will be helping educate the public and by educating the public you are helping preserve the natural beauty of the Ozarks.

Housing and a small stipend may be provided. Pets are NOT permitted in government housing! Your supervisor will be glad to provide you with a positive work reference, if deserved. Dates are negotiable, but preference will be given to those who can stay all or most of the season. We recieve many more applicants than we can use. Good luck.
