SheepGoatMarketing.info originated from the North East Sheep & Goat Marketing Project, a USDA-funded project to improve the marketing infrastructure for sheep and goat producers in the twelve northeastern states. This web site was redesigned as a National information resource for sheep and goat marketing, with special focus on the marketing of lamb and goat to the ethnic and religious markets.

Cornell University and the Empire State Meat Goat Producers Association teamed up in 2005 to conduct two "Evaluating Goats for Market Readiness" workshops led by Bob Herr, Susan Schoenian, and tatiana Stanton. The workshops include a course for basic producers and also a course for advanced producers who have already attended other grading or marketing workshops. The advanced workshop is directed towards folks who act as market coordinators, dealers, graders, 4-H leaders, county judges, etc. These workshops focus on 1) the various market channels available for goats, 2) types of goats wanted for different markets and seasons, 3) evaluating goats for health, growth, body condition score and selection grade, and 4) what information buyers need from you and you need from buyers. Participants get hands-on experience evaluating a wide range and number of market goals and evaluate carcasses from representative animals.

Featured Activity:
2006 'Evaluating Goats for Market Readiness' workshops
The 2006 workshops were held in Chemung County, NY near the PA border on September 8th and on September 10th in Montgomery County, NY near the MASS and VT borders. We were pleased as punch to have Dr. Frank Pinkerton lead the advanced workshop. Frank is a long time meat goat expert specializing in marketing and extension and was one of the primary creators of the USDA meat goat specifications. Folks in the basic group also had an opportunity to work with him. For more information and registration forms, go to click here.
