The Program on Agricultural Technology Studies (PATS) is an applied research and extension unit housed in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and linked with Cooperative Extension Services. PATS is a joint program of the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics and the Department of Rural Sociology.
PATS was established by the Wisconsin State Legislature in 1990 to examine questions like these:
What
are the implications of new agricultural technologies for Wisconsin farm
business, farm families, rural communities, and the environment?
How
do new technologies and other factors – such as social and demographic
trends, market conditions, and public policies influence changes in the Wisconsin
farm sector?
What
can be done to better balance the costs and benefits of emerging technologies
that may be used in production agriculture and in food processing?
How
can the views of Wisconsin farmers, farm industry groups, and other rural
citizens help shape the direction of university research and extension activities?
In addition to several permanent professional staff members, PATS has a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) of faculty and citizen representatives who provide input on overall program direction and feedback on PATS' activities. PATS was formerly known as the Agricultural Technology and Family Farm Institute (ATFFI), which was established by the Wisconsin State Legislature in 1990.
