President George W. Bush will meet Carol Vaughn and JoAn Niceley upon arrival in Gulfport, Mississippi, on Saturday, November 1, 2003. Vaughn and Niceley have been active volunteers with the American Cancer Society’s “Look Good … Feel Better” program.

Earlier this year, President Bush celebrated the first anniversary of the USA Freedom Corps – his initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the country, like Vaughn and Niceley, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

As part of the American Cancer Society’s “Look Good … Feel Better” program, Vaughn and Niceley volunteer one night each month teaching women coping with cancer about ways to deal with cancer treatments and the side effects that may take place. Vaughn, an aesthetician and make-up artist, and Niceley, a hair stylist, teach women about specific beauty tips to help them adjust to changes in skin color, techniques to accentuate positive features, and ways to wear hats, scarves, wigs and other accessories with confidence. As a result of their volunteer service with the American Cancer Society, patients are able to build self-esteem and forget about the challenges they face as a result of their cancer treatments.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to volunteer service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find opportunities in their own neighborhoods through the USA Freedom Corps web site at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
