President Bush to Recognize Philadelphia Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush will meet David Richman upon arrival in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Monday, September 15, 2003. For nearly ten years, Richman has been an active volunteer with Philadelphia Futures.

Earlier this year, President Bush celebrated the first anniversary of the USA Freedom Corps – his initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the country, like Richman, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

Since 1994, Richman has been an active volunteer with Philadelphia Futures, a nonprofit organization that provides economically disadvantaged high school students with long-term mentoring, academic support and enrichment activities. In 1996, Richman began mentoring a young man from the Philadelphia community, organizing extracurricular activities for them to do together and providing ongoing support during his high school and college years. Today, Richman continues to mentor this young adult and last year attended his graduation from Wheaton College in Massachusetts.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to volunteer service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find opportunities in their own neighborhoods through the USA Freedom Corps web site at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
