Adobe Acrobat PDF files on the DEC Web Site
Introduction
Portable Document Format (PDF) files are produced by Adobe Acrobat software and can only be read on computers equipped with the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Adobe makes the reader available to the public free of charge. Visitors to the DEC web site may need to download the reader as described below in order to view all of our offerings.
DEC is committed to using HTML format for regulations, for the ENB, and for other information required by statute to be made public. In general, we will use PDF format only for long documents originally prepared for paper distribution, such as manuals and reports, for forms, and for documents which cannot be made available electronically unless scanned. Longer PDF documents will have a Table of Contents posted in HTML. When we use PDFs, we try to improve their usability through the use of bookmarks and links.
Acrobat Reader
PDF files can only be opened, printed, or read with the Adobe Acrobat Reader. It can be downloaded free of charge from the Adobe acrobat reader download page. We recommend that our users use Acrobat Reader version 6.0 or higher. Some PDF documents may not open properly with older Acrobat Reader versions.
PDF Forms
Some pages on this web site contain forms in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Some of these PDF forms must be printed and filled out manually, while others have interactive features added so that they can be filled out electronically.
The free version of Acrobat Reader allows users to fill out interactive forms online, but they then must be printed out and mailed or faxed to us. Acrobat Reader does not allow users to save completed forms that retain the data that has been entered.
Accessibility
DEC is committed to providing a web site that is highly accessible to all individuals, regardless of special needs. We will minimize the use of PDF documents, particularly for our core content and documents of legal significance. Where PDFs are used, contact information will be available where an alternative electronic or print version of the document may be obtained.

Difficulty Opening or Printing a PDF Document
Many of the documents posted on the DEC web site were originally created with WordPerfect and may contain proprietary WordPerfect fonts. When necessary, we have attempted to embed these fonts in the document so that the user can view the document the way that it was intended. If incorrect fonts make a document unreadable, or if you have trouble opening/printing any PDF file, please contact the office listed on the page that links to the document for a copy in an alternative electronic or print format.
Please note that the Department of Environmental Conservation cannot advise you on how to install or run any particular software, and cannot provide technical assistance with the use of Adobe Acrobat. Please contact Adobe directly if you encounter any difficulty using their products.
