Multi-state 4-H Water Camp
The Southern Region 4-H Water Camp was held in 2004 and 2005 in Land between the Lakes, Tennessee and Jabez, Kentucky. Fifth and 6th graders engaged in activities such as water sampling and testing, a water scavenger hunt using GPS units, building a 3-D watershed, and water jeopardy to learn the importance and value of water resources. Kids also had plenty of time to enjoy the water while canoeing and collecting macroinvertebrates.
The project was successful in numerous ways. It served to educate youth on key water concepts, demonstrated a successful program that can be shared with other states and regions, and enhanced agency partnerships. Development and implementation of the Water Camp involved numerous partnerships including the Southern Region Watershed Education Network, Kentucky Water Resource Research Institute, U.S. Forest Service, University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service and Tracy Farmer Center for the Environment, and University of Tennessee Extension.
