Soil Geochemistry Spatial Database - Operation of Website

This site operates by using ArcIMS (ESRI, Inc.) and functions very similar to ArcView. The site comes up with the "Trace Element" layer both visible and active. Visible indicates that the layer is displayed (e.g., US States, US Counties, Countries), and Active indicates that the data from that layer are currently accessible. Only one layer can be Active at a time, though several layers can be visible. To change between Active Layers, the user must click (using the mouse) the desired layer’s “Active” button, then click the -“Refresh Map” bar, below the Layer Legend on the right side of the screen.

The Toolbar on the left side of the screen controls the functions. A small function identifier window will pop up when the cursor is placed on an individual button and similar information will appear at the bottom of the screen as well.

The second and third rows of buttons allow the user to zoom in, out, etc. By clicking on the “Zoom In” button (red box will appear on the toolbar button), the user can click and drag the mouse across the map to selected and enlarge a desired area. The most important button on the toolbar is the “Identify” button, symbolized by the "I" in the black circle. By clicking on that button (red box will appear), the user can then click on a map location (colored dot) and data will appear at the bottom of the screen.

Initially Trace Element Data will appear, but the user can access other data layers by clicking both Visible and Active buttons for that layer and pressing “Refresh Map”. When the “Identify” button is highlighted on the toolbar, clicking on a map location will access the data.
