The mission of this unit is to develop nondestructive evaluation technologies, engineering design criteria, and drying systems that facilitate use of underutilized materials and help conserve the forest resource. This unit serves as the primary contributor to the National Design Specification (NDS). The NDS is the foundation document for all building codes used in the United States. Its work on wood engineering design criteria directly supports the NDS. Recent contributions have included baseline information on connection performance characteristics.
