This series consists of reports, historical narratives, photographs, and publications documenting the development and administration of national forests in the Rocky Mountain west. These materials are held by NARA's Rocky Mountain Region (Denver, CO).

  • Timber Management Studies, 1903 - 1946
    5 images have been digitized from the Division of Timber Management of the Pacific Northwest Region (Region 6) of the United States Forest Service's Timber Management Studies. This series contains studies conducted region wide on a variety of topics including avalanches, logging issues, studies of specific tree types, sand dunes and paper and pulp issues. Also included are studies relating to the flora of specific areas and forests as well as annual silvaculture reports for individual forests.  These materials are held by NARA's Pacific Alaska Region (Seattle, WA).

  • Annual Grazing Report, Sierra National Forest California, 1905 - 1976
    2 multi-page documents (covering the years 1911 and 1912) have been digitized from this series. These narrative reports are illustrated with captioned photographs. Among environmental issues discussed are enforcement of protective regulations, the tourist-stockmen conflict and proposed creation of "tourist pastures" to keep livestock away from well-traveled trails, erosion problems resulting from cattle replacing sheep in a meadow, and erosion-control attempts involving log and earth fill.   • Historic Photos, ca. 1920 - ca. 1960
    217 photographs taken by Pacific Northwest Region (Region 6) of the United States Forest Service were digitized. This series includes images of recreational areas and some special events that occurred in the forests, close-up images of flora of the forests, and general images of the forests. Also included is a collection of photographs of logging activities arranged by logging company name.  These materials are held by NARA's Pacific Alaska Region (Seattle, WA).

  • Panoramic Photographs, 1924-1941
    193 photographs taken by the Division of Fire Control of the Pacific Northwest Region (Region 6) of the United States Forest Service were digitized.   The images were taken from each fire lookout, and some show lookout outbuildings. At the end of the series are a number of images taken following the Tillamook Burn. These materials are held by NARA's Pacific Alaska Region (Seattle, WA).

  • Recreational Maps, 1936 - 1942
    71 recreational maps created by Pacific Northwest Region (Region 6) of the United States Forest Service were digitized. This series contains the record copy of the individual maps that were handed out to tourists and others using the forests. They usually contain general information about the forest and the recreational facilities available as well as the map. These maps are held by NARA's Pacific Alaska Region (Seattle, WA).

  • Special Report on Farm Forestry Accomplishments in Region Ten, August 15, 1939
    1 multi-page document from the General Records series has been digitized. This report of farm forestry accomplishments in California and Nevada, which comprised the Pacific Southwest Region (also known as Region Ten), includes multiple captioned photographs. The report discusses issues such as markets for farm forest timber products, woodland plantings on farms to conserve soil and moisture and promote wildlife habitat, and the mistreatment of land by repeated controlled burning.   • Area Analysis Report, Northern Sierra Nevada Area, California, June 1941
    1 multi-page document has been digitized from the General Correspondence series. This report discusses the environment, economy, employment, natural resources, and related problems in the counties of Amador, Butte, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, and Yuba, and small portions of Plumas, Sierra, and Tehama counties, California. It is accompanied by several tables and colored maps. Among the environmental issues discussed are abandonment of orchards in the foothills and conflicts over livestock in the "forest marginal zone" of upper Yuba County.   • Special Report from the Range Conservation and Improvement Files, 1941 - 1963

It discusses grazing in the area slightly to the east of the east central portion of the Northern Great Basin, and in the southwest quarter of Elko County, Nevada. Among the environmental issues it covers are the impact of the establishment of Humboldt National Forest, the instability of land ownership in lands formerly owned by railroads, and the benefits of fencing to control seasonal use of range. Hand tinted glass slides show images of a number of forests in Oregon and Washington as well as close-up images of specific flora and fauna found in the forests.
