October 1, 2007-Annual Crime Report

April 20, 2007-Security Alert Issued

April 18, 2007

In light of the tragedy that occurred at Virginia Tech, the Oregon State Police and the Department of Public Safety, along with other campuses, are looking at what lessons can be learned and improvements made. This includes notification processes and researching available technology. As this is a developing story we are monitoring for accurate information regarding what happened so the information can be used to help review tactical plans and local educational programs.

At OSU, we work with the college and our local public safety partners to see how we can address any concerns from students and staff following incident that occurred on April 16th, 2007. Public safety agencies and education continue to participate with our community partners to encourage the prompt reporting of suspicious activity or information regarding on campus concerns that students and staff may have. Everyone should work together whether in our communities or on our campuses to prevent these horrific incidents from happening.

Although incidents such as this are extremely rare, law enforcement agencies train and plan for tactical responses to these incidents in our schools and on our campuses. For example, training and planning for a tactical response to the Oregon State University Campus has occurred. This planning involves the Oregon State Police University Area Command, OSP SWAT Team, Corvallis Police Department and other law enforcement.

Some concepts for personal safety have been developed for consideration in shooting situations. These include:
1) Have a plan for escape; be aware of your surroundings including exits and windows.
2) If safe to do so, evacuate.
3) If it is unsafe to evacuate, take shelter by locking and barricading doors
4) Be prepared to provide timely and accurate information regarding the location and description of the suspect.
5) Have emergency phone numbers, including the Public Safety Dispatch number (541) 737-7000 programmed in your phone.
6) Share concerns you have about erratic or disturbing behavior with campus officials including OSP/DPS and CAPS

First Aid Supplies

The Oregon State Safety code requires that first aid supplies be available in close proximity to all employees. The required supplies are based upon the intended use and types of injuries that could occur in the work environment. Each department is responsible for determining how many first aid kits are needed for its work areas and the development of a program for maintaining these kits. First aid kits and replacement supplies are available through the Department of Recreational Sports Safety Programs (737-5411).

A joint law enforcement training exercise will be held this Thursday, May 3, on the OSU campus from 9 a.m. to noon that will allow different police agencies to work together on emergency preparedness in a busy university environment.
Numerous law enforcement personnel, including a SWAT team, will be on campus in the vicinity of 30th Street and Jefferson Way for the drill, which will be centered in vacant Reed and Heckard lodges.
