USCIS Announces Second Half H-2B Cap Already Met

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced on January 8th that the H-2B 33,000 cap for the second half cap for fiscal 2009 was reached on January 7, 2009. The cap for the first half of the fiscal year was reached on July 29. The closing of the cap and Congress' failure to pass an extension of the H-2B returning worker exemption before now means that many landscape companies will not have access to the H-2B workers they need this year.

NCAE Memo Explains Effects of E-Verify Rule

ANLA Partners with OFA and GCA for 2009 Educational Programs

ANLA has partnered with the Association of Floriculture Professionals (OFA) and the Garden Centers of America" (GCA) to exchange member pricing benefits for key programs in 2009. ANLA members will have the opportunity to attend the OFA Short Course in July and the GCA Holiday Tour in November at member pricing. OFA and GCA members are welcome to attend the ANLA Management Clinic in February at the ANLA member price.

The schedule for the 2009 ANLA Management Clinic has been built to include sessions that address the challenging marketplace and tighter economy. According to ANLA President, Greg Schaan, Imperial Nurseries (CT), "Our goal this year was to offer our attendees a program that would directly address the tough economic climate. One that would talk about how to run leaner, work with banks and identify new opportunities. In short, an event you can't afford to miss." Department of Homeland Security Issues Final Supplemental No-Match Rule--New Developments

The Bush Administration has published a supplemental final rule requiring employers receiving reports of social security name and number mismatches to take specified actions. The decision of whether to allow the rule to proceed is in the hands of a federal district judge.

H. MARC CATHEY (1928 ? 2008)

ANLA is saddened by news of the death of Henry Marc Cathey. Dr. Cathey devoted most of his life and a long, distinguished career to the horticulture industry. Notably, he served as director of the U.S. National Arboretum for ten years, launching now-famous exhibits such as the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum. He later became president of the American Horticultural Society, and was also largely responsible for the establishment of the Floriculture and Nursery Research Initiative partnership with ANLA and others. Dr. Cathy will be remembered, and missed greatly, by all whose lives and work he touched.

Green Industry Responds to EPA Rulemaking on WaterSense

ANLA, participating in a coalition with green industry partners, has filed a public comment on the EPA's draft rulemaking for specifications on water usage for single family homes. The project, titled "WaterSense," calls for reduce water usage for residential landscapes, and the original draft proposal was particularly problematic.

ANLA Joins the European Landscape Contractors Association (ELCA)!
