Briefing Room - Avian Influenza (bird flu)
Avian Influenza, also known as bird flu, is caused by a virus that infects wild birds, such as ducks, gulls, and shorebirds that migrate, or fly to different parts of the world depending on the seasons. Bird flu can also infect domestic poultry, such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese.
CSREES is addressing the issue by providing funding for research, education and extension efforts, conducted primarily at land grant colleges and universities. CSREES-funded research is being done by a multi-state partnership to prevent and control the spread of bird flu. CSREES also funded a multi-state partnership that developed a lesson plan for high school science students.
