National Research Initiative - Soil Processes

The National Research Initiative (NRI) was not reauthorized in the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 (Pub. L. 110-246; i.e., the 2008 Farm Bill). We encourage you to explore funding opportunities under the new Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program at www.csrees.usda.gov/business/reporting/stakeholder/an_stakeholder_afri. Soil is a vital natural resource that not only sustains plant and animal productivity, but also has profound effects on the health and quality of the environment. As such, agricultually-related sustainability hinges on the interactions among the biological, chemical and physical properties and processes in this below-ground ecosystem. More science-based knowledge is needed to fill gaps regarding the combined interactions of the properties and processes affecting soil quality as it relates to agricultural sustainability.
