From the Grassroots to the Nation

Welcome to the Western Sustainable Agriculture Working Group Web Site.

The WSAWG is the only regional organization that connects grassroots promoters of sustainable agriculture in the west to each other and to the nation.

Mission:  The Western Sustainable Agriculture Working Group is a non-profit organization bringing together diverse individuals and groups working in sustainable agriculture and food systems to share successful models, realize our collective strengths, build regional capacity and inform the agriculture policy debate.

2007, continuing into 2008 is the year of Farm Bill renewal.

Outreach Team - We are building a network of action teams in each state in the west, and you are invited.   Please contact us if you will be part of a team in your state to help disseminate information and/or action alerts when quick action is needed to communicate with our legislators.  Minutes of Outreach Team conference calls are Here.

We are sponsoring Farm Bill Policy Workshops to acquaint you with the platforms that are being proposed and to take input from you on what is needed in a new Farm Bill.   See Upcoming Events

Our Enews features Farm Bill 2007 resources, bills being introduced, and related activities.

We encourage agriculture related groups in the West to become familiar with the

Sustainable Agriculture Coalition's website which is loaded with Farm Bill information, and to join SAC:     www.sustainableagriculturecoalition.org

WHAT WE DO

The Western SAWG helps its members:

  • Understand and act on federal public policies and programs that may help or hinder a transition to more sustainable agriculture and food systems in the West.
  • Come together on an annual basis to provide education regarding sustainable agriculture issues and programs to provide skill development, networking and collaboration opportunities.
  • Promote the increased profitability of farmers and ranchers committed to using sustainable agricultural practices and approaches.
  • Create real choices for food consumers by giving them greater opportunity to buy high quality food products more directly from the farmers and ranchers in their communities and region.
  • Build capacity for further sustainable agriculture and food system research and development.

Western SAWG addresses issues that no one of its members can completely and effectively tackle on its own here in the West.  Western SAWG serves as a clearinghouse for agricultural policy, program models and analysis.  We provide region-wide issue development, develop joint collaborative projects and conferences, and can offer project endorsements for member initiatives. Our area of operation includes organizations and individuals located within the states of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

We administer 1 email listserv, which also receives our monthly Enews.

The wsawg listserv is for all topics related to sustainable agriculture, including organic, genetically modified organisms, and conservation issues.

Action alerts are the most common notices.
