Forestry and Wildlife Management

The Agroforestry Resource Center (ARC) provides leadership for the achievement of a sustainable balance between economic development and preservation of the forest dominated landscape in the Catskill Mountain/Hudson Valley Region. Established by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Greene County, it serves as an educational resource for forest owners, farmers, policy makers and the general public to assist in making wise land use decisions to ensure that rural landscapes continue to provide the viable sustainable natural assets on which residents depend.

Cornell University's Department of Natural Resources Programs:

  • Ecology and Management of Landscapes provides information on resource management opportunities and challenges confronting managers of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
  • ForestConnect provides educational resources to help forest owners (families and private citizens) make decisions about the management of their property to ensure the sustainability of private forest land prodectivity and ecological function.
  • Fish and Wildlife Biology and Management Extension programs range from wildlife damage management to habitat protection of species threatened by environmental disturbances.

The Wildlife Damage Management Program is a cooperative effort on the part of Cornell University, USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets with the goal of developing a comprehensive understanding of wildlife damage problems and management options in New York State.

Urban forestry issues are addressed through the Urban Horticulture Institute at Cornell University. A guide for a cost-effective method of the re-forestation of urban spaces entitled Creating the Urban Forest: The Bare Root Method is a resource available online and as a DVD.

Resource Partner:

The New York Watershed Agricultural Council (WAC) is a non-profit organization with a mission to support the economic viability of agriculture and forestry through the protection of water quality and the promotion of land conservation in the New York City watershed region. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County works closely with the WAC in their efforts.
