Welcome to the Formosan Subterranean Termite Research Unit and the
National Formosan Subterranean Termite Program Coordination Website!
The Formosan subterranean termite research Unit and the National Program Coordinator work in tandem for solutions to the national problem of infestation of structures and trees by the Formosan subterranean termite. A multidisciplinary team comprising eight scientists is conducting research on all aspects of the biology and physiology of the FST to evaluate effective utilization of existing termite control products and for the development of new safe and effective ones. The groups primary goal is to eliminate the FST as an economic pest in areas where it has become established through the application of area-wide management strategies to reduce the populations below economic threshold levels. Development of biological control agents and strategies based upon the termites physiological weaknesses are long-term goals. Cooperative research includes a demonstration of the area-wide management strategy in New Orleans French Quarter. Other priority goals are to educate the public on best management practices and how to prevent spread of this imported pest into uninfested areas. Pest management professionals are educated on the identification of FST to allow rapid and early intervention to prevent establishment of this pest into new locales.
