‘Glow’ exhibit to shine at Florida Museum

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Vomiting shrimp, vampire squid and cookie cutter sharks don’t sound too friendly, but they are glowing to help us. The study of these natural light-producing creatures can help discover cancer cures, detect toxic bacteria and expose deadly anthrax spores.

Museum receives grant to start MESS program in Marion County

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History has received a $397,143 grant from the Administration for Children, Youth and Families/Head Start Bureau to expand its Marvelous Explorations through Science and Stories program into Marion County.

Popular photo exhibit to remain at Florida Museum through Jan. 18

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History will extend the display of John Moran’s “Journal of Light: A Photographer’s Search for the Soul of Florida” traveling exhibit until Jan. 18. The popular exhibit features more than 50 color photographs of Florida wildlife and environments with an emphasis on Florida waters.

New initiative to create residence hall of the future

It’s no longer enough for a college residence hall to provide just four walls and a bed. The campus housing of today must foster learning and comfort while balancing environmental and technological concerns and do so in a way that’s affordable to both the school and the students.

Brazilian Ministry of Environment recognizes Tropical Conservation and Development Program at the University of Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Tropical Conservation and Development Program (TCD) at the University of Florida (UF) received an honorable mention in the science and technology category of the 2005 Chico Mendes Environmental Award from the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment. The prize recognizes the work of individuals and organizations that are committed to the preservation and sustainable use of natural resources in the Brazilian Amazon.

UF creates $1.5 million endowed professorship in early childhood education, named after ex-publisher and child-advocate David Lawrence

UF Community Campaign passes goal, raises $1.08 million for charity

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Despite predictions that a year of hurricanes and other natural disasters might lead to “charity exhaustion,” the University of Florida Community Campaign surpassed this year’s $1 million goal by nearly $89,000, campaign officials announced today.

UF’s Carlton Davis inducted into George Washington Carver Hall of Fame at Tuskegee University
