Kathy Hadley

Kathleen Hadley was named Executive Director of the National Center for Appropriate Technology in July 1997. Prior to that she served as associate director and development director for NCAT. She has more than 18 years of management experience with project, program and corporate responsibilities, including personnel, resource center, and computer services areas. Previously she was a business owner and partner in an energy and environmental consulting firm and worked for the Montana State Energy Office. In 1997 she was appointed to the Governor's Electric Utility Industry Restructuring Advisory Committee for the state of Montana. She has a BS in Biology and MS in Biology from State University College at Buffalo.

Marcia Brown

Marcia Brown came to NCAT in 1998 after a long career working for Montana members of Congress both in Washington, D.C. and in Montana. At NCAT, Marcia has developed expertise in Human Resource management while also providing oversight of NCAT's Information Technology Division, Resource Centers, Administrative Services, and property management. With employees in multiple locations across the country, Marcia has used her knowledge of federal law to develop policies and procedures that ensure compliance with state and federal labor laws. She has developed a new internal pay plan, increased the depth and breadth of benefits available to employees, and established strong payroll processing capabilities. She has also developed long-term recruitment and hiring practices that have increased the diversity of the organization. Marcia's strength is designing policies and procedures that protect employees as well as organizations. Marcia is a member of the National Society for Human Resource Management and the Continental Divide Chapter of the Montana State Society for Human Resource Management. A Montana native, she attended the University of Montana majoring in political science and retains a strong interest in government and public policy.

Katherine Adam

Katherine Adam (AM English, University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana) took Ozark Organic Growers Association short courses in organic agriculture. Her business experience includes bookkeeping, tax preparation for family landscaping business—plus extensive experience in land management and affordable housing and experience teaching grammar and composition. Ms. Adam has 12 years' experience with NCAT editorial review, wrote/researched for the Emerging Champions Report, and edited the Natchez Trace Report. Her principal areas of expertise as NCAT program specialist include horticulture, specialty products, marketing, and agritourism.

Marisa Alcorta

Marisa Alcorta received her B.S. in Plant Science from Cornell University where she studied sustainable agriculture and international development. She is currently finishing her Master's degree at UC Davis in Horticulture & Agronomy, where she studies weed management in vineyards. Marisa has experience working with farmers in Ohio, New York and Texas, where she organized cooperative markets and helped launch a new farmers' market. Her duties at NCAT include outreach to Latino farmers, responding to Spanish inquiries, and reviewing Spanish publications and web pages. She also handles some ATTRA project casework in grapes, weed management, compost, cover cropping, and stone fruit crops.

Sandra Anderson

Ms. Anderson earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Montana State University, graduating with honors in 1991. She has been a registered professional engineer since 1998. After working 13 years for Montana Power/NorthWestern Energy, she moved on to the medical imaging and real estate fields, before joining NCAT in May of 2006. Her current responsibilities are to help businesses implement energy efficiency measures under the auspices of the E+ Business Partners Electric Conservation Program.

Dolores Atchison has been with NCAT for 18 years as a receptionist. Her main experience is working the Reception Area, answering phones, directing callers to the right staff, distributing mail daily, bulk mailing, copying, and other support staffs. Ms. Atchison also provides support to the library and works on the LIHEAP database.

Ann Baier

Ann Baier is a UC Davis graduate with an MS in International Agriculture Development and Agronomy, who has experience in providing training and education to minority and limited resource farmers. She is an inspector for the California Certified Organic Farmers and was the Executive Director of Roots and Wings, a non-profit that provides farm- and garden-based education and training programs to young people.

Alice Beetz grew up and later worked seasonally on a grain and cattle farm in northern Illinois. She earned a BS in education and an MS in horticulture before joining NCAT in 1989. Most of her NCAT work has been with the ATTRA project, handling topics such as mushroom cultivation, forages and grazing management, worms, and agroforestry. She has also worked on several grazing projects and with a graziers group.

Jeff Birkby has worked for the past 24 years on sustainable agriculture, sustainable development, energy efficiency and renewable energy projects for state, regional and national organizations. Before joining NCAT in 1988, Mr. Birkby supervised energy outreach programs for the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC). While working for the state of Montana, Birkby supervised the Energy Extension Service and the State Energy Conservation Program. Birkby also served as board member and board chairman for the nonprofit Alternative Energy Resources Organization (AERO). His past experience with NCAT includes managing the National Appropriate Technology Assistance Service (NATAS) for the U.S. Department of Energy. Birkby currently manages outreach efforts for NCAT's National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service (also called ATTRA), overseeing website development, publications production, and media relations.

Linda Coffey

Linda Coffey comes from a family farm in central Missouri, where they raised cattle, hogs, sheep and horses. She majored in animal science at the University of Missouri and enjoyed an internship at the United States Sheep Experiment Station near Dubois, Idaho; later completing a masters in animal science. Linda joined NCAT in August 2000, working primarily with the ATTRA project on sheep, goat, and multispecies grazing issues.

She is a member of the Butte Chapter of the Montana Society of Certified Public Accountants, and has several years of accounting and auditing experience. She joined NCAT in 2008.

Dave Daugherty

After a stint in the Air Force working as a radar repairman and operator, Dave attended MSU and graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Dave worked for The Montana Power Company as a Distribution Engineer, Communications Engineer, and later as an Energy Services Department Engineer. His last job was working as a field rep on Energy Star programs administered by NEEA. His interests include flying (private pilot), SCUBA diving, camping and other outdoor activities. Dave's work at NCAT is focused mainly on energy conservation projects for NorthWestern Energy.

Rex Dufour

Rex Dufour's background is in entomology and integrated pest management. His work experience includes managing sustainable development projects in Thailand and Laos. Mr. Dufour has worked as both project manager and program specialist for NCAT and heads NCAT's California office. In addition to the ATTRA project, he is involved in several minority farmer outreach projects.

John J. English joined NCAT in 2003. He graduated from the University of Montana - School of Business, and has 8 years experience in the field of Internet and Computer administration. His expertise includes website design and development, systems administration, as well as user support. He enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, fly-fishing, geocaching and of course, surfing the Internet. In fact, it's a good bet that when he is not at a computer, he will be doing something outdoors with his loved ones.

Anne Fanatico

Anne Fanatico came to NCAT in 1993 from the Oregon State University Rabbit Research Center. Ms. Fanatico holds a BA in Zoology and Spanish from the University of North Carolina, and an MS in Animal Science from Oregon State University. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Poultry Science at the University of Arkansas. She worked overseas for 2 years in Costa Rica as a Peace Corps Volunteer specializing in agroforestry. Her areas of specialty at NCAT include small livestock; particularly pasture-based poultry production,including organic production, new marketing options, and alternative feeding.

Margo Hale

Margo Hale grew up in Northwest Arkansas and comes from a dairy cattle background. She was very involved in 4-H and raised Holstein cattle. She received a BS in Animal Science and is currently finishing her Master’s in Agricultural and Extension Education, both at the University of Arkansas. Margo joined NCAT in December 2003 as an Animal Science Intern, working mainly with small ruminants.

Holly Hill

Holly Hill joined NCAT in October of 2006 after an internship through the summer. She holds a BA in Art History from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. She grew up on a beef cattle ranch in southwestern Montana, sparking her interest in sustainable agriculture. Her current responsibilities at NCAT include the development of a farm energy database and farm-energy-related research.

Tammy Hinman

Tammy is a native Coloradoan who came to Butte, Montana, via a long stint of farming and sustainable agriculture work in New York State and Arizona. Her Bachelors degree from Colorado State University in Horticulture Food Crops and Entomology set her on her path in agriculture. After finishing her Master's degree in Food System studies from Antioch University, she worked at Cornell University Cooperative Extension as a communications specialist in the area of sustainable agriculture and small farms. She has also worked with the Northeast Organic Farming Association and the Finger Lakes Culinary Bounty on organic certification under the National Organic Program and regional food identity campaigns. At NCAT, Tammy will be drawing from her expertise to provide information and develop resources for farmers and people working with farmers through the ATTRA 1-800 line, publications, and other horticultural- related projects.

Dale Horton

As an architect and energy consultant, Dale Horton's experience has focused on integrating architecture and energy engineering to develop solutions that improve energy efficiency, comfort, and productivity in residential and commercial facilities. He joined NCAT in 1998 after 13 years as owner of a small consulting firm offering architecture, energy, and utility management services. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo and a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana. He currently manages a range of renewable energy and energy conservation projects relating to residences, multi-family housing, businesses, and agriculture.

Dave Houser

Mr. Houser earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering Science from Montana State University in 1981. He then started working for the Montana Power Company (MPC) as a construction and startup engineer on the twin 750 MW coal-fired power plants in Colstrip, MT. During his 23 year history with MPC and NorthWestern Energy, Mr. Houser managed energy conservation program design and implementation activities, market analysis and planning functions, resource planning analysis and modeling, and customer service and satisfaction efforts. Mr. Houser testified in numerous regulatory and legislative hearings on conservation and resource planning issues, and was one of MPC's representatives on its least-cost resource planning advisory committee for about ten years. After Dave left the utility in early 2005, he started Houser Consulting Services and has worked as an independent consultant for two years. Dave has been a licensed professional mechanical engineer in Montana since 1986. He was also the first Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance in 1996-97.

Hal Hubber

Hal Hubber earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Art & Design from Western Montana College in 1978, and later received his professional Interior Design license At Boise State University. He worked in the Architectural arena as a facilities planner and Director of Planning & Construction for the Montana Power Co. for over 20 years and later 3 years as the Facilities Manager at Touch America. Hal has extensive project management experience in commercial office buildings. Hal's responsibility at NCAT is working on energy conservation projects for NorthWestern Energy.

Kay Joslin has worked for NCAT since 1988 and has managed the LIHEAP Clearinghouse since 1990. Prior to that she was an information specialist for NCAT's National Appropriate Technology Assistance Service. Since 1995 she has been a member of the board of directors of the National Low-Income Energy (NLIEC), helping to coordinate workshops and information materials for NLIEC's annual low-income energy conference. She has a BA in journalism from the University of Montana and over 20 years of experience in all aspects of information dissemination, publications production, writing, editing, research, and public relations.

Jason Kolpin came to NCAT in August of 2008 after graduating from Montana Tech with a BS Information Technology and Design. Jason has nearly ten years experience as a Linux Web Server Administrator and nearly as many years experience doing website design and management using PHP and MySQL. In his free time, Jason enjoys off-road motorcycle riding, generally spending time in the Montana outdoors, playing and composing music, and spending time with his family and friends.

Jody Krzan joined NCAT in 1987. Ms. Krzan has extensive experience in the area of office support services. Her responsibilities include providing organizational, administrative and clerical support to the Executive Director and other senior management staff. She coordinates all NCAT Board of Directors' meetings, travel and logistics and file records. Ms. Krzan provides support in proposal, report and contract preparation. She is also skilled in personal and business communications, supervision and departmental planning processes. Ms. Krzan is skilled in the use of several software packages, including Microsoft Office Suite and WordPerfect.

Al Kurki has an academic and professional background in community organizing and development. He has over twenty years of experience working in non-profit organizations in capacities ranging from executive director to block organizer. His current NCAT assignments include working for the ATTRA project on western ag issues and biofuels, and working for the Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education grants program in the areas of professional development, evaluation, communications and special projects.

Nancy Matheson grew up on her family's dryland wheat farm east of Conrad, Montana, later moving to Berkeley, California, where she earned a BA in human and natural resource geography at UCB. Little did she know when she left the farm that she would return to Montana for a life and career in agriculture. From agricultural research to ag policy work at the state level, to grassroots sustainable agricultural development, full circle back to farming, is how Ms. Matheson has spent her career so far. Currently, she combines her work with NCAT's ATTRA and Grow Montana projects with operating a small, irrigated organic farm outside of Helena.

Teresa Maurer joined NCAT in 1991, and has 20 years of experience in sustainable agriculture education and research, biology, and project management, including 5 years with The Land Institute in Kansas and the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture in Oklahoma. Ms. Maurer's work has included grassland ecology, livestock and forage systems, weed management, and diverse collaborations with agricultural organizations at the local, regional and national levels. Her education includes BA from Northwestern University in Biology, and MA/PhD from University of Oregon. She manages NCAT's nationally recognized sustainable agriculture service, ATTRA, and recently developed and guided outreach projects for Hispanic farmers and small landholders in Texas and tribal communities in the Four Corners.

Mike Morris

Before coming to NCAT in 1998, Mike Morris earned a PhD in Philosophy and taught at colleges and universities in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Montana. At NCAT, he works with ranchers and farmers to develop more efficient and sustainable ways of using water and energy. He is especially interested in irrigation, solar, and wind energy, and is Project Leader for several farm energy projects.

Tracy Mumma joined NCAT in 1999. She has written, lectured and taught about reducing the environmental impact of construction, and holds an MS degree in Environmental Studies. She lives on a small farm powered by draft horses. Ms. Mumma administers content for the NCAT website and the National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service website, and aids in editing NCAT's sustainable agriculture publications.

Tom Pelletier first joined NCAT in 1978 in the position of Information Specialist and moved on to Community Energy Management Specialist with a focus on energy conservation. Tom was hired as Energy Coordinator for the Butte Silver Bow local government to increase energy efficiency in all government, and commercial facilities. With a dedication to promoting energy efficiency in commercial buildings Tom worked in positions with Robertshaw and Johnson Controls selling HVAC systems and energy conservation measures throughout Montana and the Northwest. Tom also worked for The University of Montana, D.A. Davidson & Co. and as a Private Consultant in the Energy Conservation field. Tom has a BA Degree from The University of Montana and a Masters Degree from Montana State. Tom returned to NCAT in 2008 as Energy Efficiency Marketing Specialist promoting energy efficiency in all types of commercial facilities.

Andy has a MS degree is Sustainable Systems from Slippery Rock University. He is a certified Permaculture designer who specializes in forest gardening. Prior to joining NCAT in 2007, Andy worked and managed diversified organic farms in Ohio, Vermont, Colorado, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. He continues to be an avid beekeeper and has a strong interest in biofuels.

Marie Ruiz attended Nursing school from Spring of 2004-2006 at the University of Hawaii-Kapiolani Community College and will be continuing her studies at Montana Tech. She has experience working as a Medic, Financial Management Technician, Human Resource Specialist with the US Army and 2 years work experience as an Administrative Assistant. Her duties include reception, data entry, management of incoming and outgoing mail and publications printing. Marie is temporarily deployed in Iraq.

Jeff Schahczenski

Jeff Schahczenski has expertise in organic and sustainable agriculture public policy, marketing and economics, transgenics in agriculture, organic horticulture, renewable ag energy, cooperative development, sustainable building, intercultural communications and beekeeping. He is also Executive Director of both the Big Hole River Foundation and Western Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (WSAWG). He has worked with the Alternative Energy Resources Organization (AERO) on regional sustainable agriculture projects, is an adjunct instructor for Western Montana College and Montana Tech, and serves on several non-profit boards and is building his own straw bale house and greenhouse. Before moving to Montana, Jeff worked for Rutgers University, started one of the first CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farms in New Jersey, received graduate degrees in agricultural economics and political science, served in the Peace Corps in Belize, Central America, and worked on his grandfather’s dairy farm in Wisconsin.

Mary Anne Skuletich

A member of the NCAT staff for over 14 years, Mary Anne Skuletich has extensive knowledge of computer hardware, software and networking topology and protocols; including DOS, Novell, Xenix, Windows, Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems. Ms. Skuletich has held the position of NCAT's Network Administrator for the past eight years, encompassing technical support, configuration implementation and management, network monitoring, LAN hardware and applications, performance analysis, investigating and recommending solutions for enhancing reliability and future growth needs. She administers all E-mail, RAS Systems, TCP/IP and Dialup networking, telecommunications, and end-user support and training as well as database design and multimedia presentations.

Rose Sullivan

Rose Sullivan began work at NCAT as a library-assistant in 1978. Following the big lay-off in the early '80s, she was appointed "Director of the Resource Center." She retired in 1992, flunked retirement, so came back to the library on a part-time basis in 1997.

Ms. Svejkovsky joined NCAT in 1990. She is involved with sustainable energy and sustainable community projects in outreach, communication, and website design and administration. Svejkovsky holds a BS in Technical Communications from the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology. She has authored several published articles on energy efficiency topics and has produced NCAT annual reports and newsletters.

For the Community Alliance with Family Farmers, she edited Farmer to Farmer, the Agrarian Advocate, and numerous other publications. In the 1970s Karen was a partner in Odyssey Orchards, one of California’s first organic farms, a catalyst in the formation of California Certified Organic Farmers. She was one of the founders of the Farallones Institute — now the Occidental Arts amd Ecology Center — pioneering environmental education that combines organic farming, appropriate technology, green building, and sustainable communities.

Sheryl Vogel came to NCAT in 1997 after working for the Mine Waste Technology Program at Montana Tech of the University of Montana where she developed a center for electronic research of mine waste information at Montana Tech Library. Prior to that she was project coordinator of a 4-year ecophysiology project at the University of Florida. She manages NCAT's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Clearinghouse databases and maintains the LIHEAP Clearinghouse web site. Ms. Vogel holds a BA in Botany and a MS in Forestry from the University of Montana.

Julie Wulf joined the NCAT staff in 2008, she is a support team member for the Publications department. Julie is originally from Chicago where she earned her BA in Fine Arts Interior Design and gained extensive administrative experience working for various corporations over the last 10 years.

Dan joined the NCAT staff in 2008 and primarily works on energy conservation projects within the Northwestern Energy E+ Plus Program. He received a mechanical engineering degree from Montana Tech and previosly worked for a Mechanical/Electrical consulting firm in Montana.
