Improving Irrigation Efficiency and Water Conservation

Through Extension and research efforts, Texas A&M AgriLife and the New Mexico State University College of Agriculture and Home Economics are implementing strategies for meeting present and future water demand in the Rio Grande Basin. These strategies expand the efficient use of available water and create new water supplies.

Congress initially appropriated funds for the Efficient Irrigation for Water Conservation in the Rio Grande Basin project, also known as the Rio Grande Basin Initiative (RGBI), in 2001 and continues funding the project. The initiative is administered through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service and Texas A&M AgriLife Texas Water Resources Institute.
