In 1991, when the Internet was a jumble of incompatible networks and closed systems, a team of University programmers created Gopher—the Internet's first widely used search-and-retrieval system. This predecessor to the World Wide Web set the tone at the U for technological excellence and innovation. Today, students, faculty, and staff have the best resources possible. The latest achievement is a vast and secure wireless network fanning out over the Twin Cities campus.
