Indian Nation Fee-to-Trust Land Acquisition Applications in New York State

The United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) has under consideration applications from the Oneida Indian Nation of New York and Cayuga Indian Nation of New York tribes (tribes) requesting the BIA to acquire lands in trust for the benefit of the tribes. The stated purpose for taking the land into trust is to help ensure tribal cultural preservation, self-determination, self-sufficiency and economic independence.

The decision to acquire or not to acquire the subject lands will be made by the Secretary of Interior in accordance with federal law and regulations. Title 25 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 151, entitled Land Acquisitions, provides the regulatory framework within which the Secretary must consider in the exercise of her discretion.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has created this site to provide access to the relevant records of the fee-to-trust land acquisitions that are currently under consideration by the BIA for lands within the State. Information for each tribal application can be viewed at the links above.
