Leashed Tracking Dog License

Statutory Authority: ECL 11-0928 and 6 NYCRR Part 175 and Part 176

The Leashed Tracking Dog License authorizes qualified individuals to use certified leashed tracking dogs to track and find dead, wounded or injured big game. EXCEPT as permitted by this license no person may use a dog to track dead, wounded, or injured big game.

Please note:

  • A valid New York State Big Game hunting license is mandatory.
  • A score of 80% or higher on the written exam is required.
  • The exam is offered on an annual basis.
  • There is a $50.00 application fee, and a $25.00 non-refundable processing fee.
  • This license expires 5 years from date of issuance.

Please contact the Special Licenses Unit with any questions or concerns about qualifying for this license. To apply for this license, or to register for the exam, complete the Leashed Tracking Dog Application (PDF 17.9 kb), and send with a check or money order for the appropriate amount to the Department of Environmental Conservation Special Licenses Unit.
