3rd annual chocolate expo and holiday gift market
December 07, 2008 :  11:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.

Description:   Begin the holiday season at the New York State Museum! Enjoy the finest chocolates, desserts, specialty foods, and holiday gifts the region has to offer. You'll find something special for everyone on your shopping list with a selection of handmade bath products, beautiful jewelry, painted works of art, and much more. Be sure to treat yourself to the chocolate fountain and enjoy seasonal music while strolling through the galleries.
After visiting the Chocolate Expo, stop by the 2008 Holiday Tree Lighting and Fireworks Festival presented by the New York State Office of General Services from 1 to 6 p.m. at Empire State Plaza and Concourse. This free event will feature a holiday marketplace, children's arts and crafts area, and holiday music. Lecture
curator's choice - discovering the life of the steam ship baltic
December 10, 2008 :  7:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M.

Description:   Ron Burch, Museum curator of art and architecture, will discuss the process of discovery in researching a mid-19th century ship's portrait in the Museum's collection. Inquiry into the history surrounding Samuel Walters' painting of a storm-tossed transatlantic steamship disclosed an intriguing web of personal risk and corporate high stakes on the high seas. We will see the painting in the exhibit hall after the lecture.

December 26, 2008 :  1:00 P.M. - 3:00 P.M.

Description:   Get your free tickets at the Main Lobby and meet in the Huxley Theater. Shows begin at 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm.  Join us as we explore the constellations that are viewable during the Holiday season. Learn some techniques that will help guide you through the nighttime sky. The origins of constellation myths will be also be discussed. Recommended for ages 7+, limited to 30 people per session.

Description:   Investigate the Invaders exhibit as a detective on a mystery hunt, or see if you can match a number if real invasive species with their pictures - not as easy as it sounds!  Find out what is being done and what we can do to slow down the invasion.  Program is designed for children, age 8 and up, is free of charge and no registration is required.

Excursion
animal tracking in the pine bush
February 07, 2009 :  10:00 A.M. - 11:30 P.M.

Description:   Mammals are abundant but sneaky; they cover every inch of the forest, but are almost never seen.  However, their tracks betray their presence and give evidence to their habitats.  Join Dr. Roland Kays, the curator of mammals at the Museum, and wildlife biologist Carl Herzog, of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, for a 1-mile hunt for clues about the mammals hiding and thriving in the Albany Pine Bush. 
This program takes place at the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center and is free of charge. Pre-registration is required by January 28.  Limited to 25 participants.  Children must attend with an adult.  Call 518-473-7154 or e-mail psteinba@mail.nysed.gov.

tie dye workshop

Description:   Learn different techniques to achieve the tie dye look you want.  Bring the item(s) of your choice to dye - all other dying materials will be furnished.  Participants will receive a detailed workbook to take home.  Limit: 20 participants.  FEE: MEMBERS are FREE (please furnish your membership number when registering), $5.00 for Non-members.

March 14, 2009 :  1:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M.

Description:   Bring in windy March with kite making.  The kite will be a simple design and made with easy materials.  Decorate, cut, and assemble the kite, then learn some flying tips as we go outside on the Museum Terrace to fly our new creations.  Adults with children age 10 and older are welcome.

amazing research - birds are dinosaurs: avian origins and evolutionary affinities

Description:   The idea that birds are descended from dinosaurs has become the consensus view of ornithologists in the last 15 years. Museum curator of birds Dr. Jeremy Kirchman will discuss the many new lines of evidence that link modern birds to the extinct dinosaurs, and will explain how scientists reconstruct the evolutionary relationships among groups of species.

Description:   New York in Bloom has become one of Albany's most anticipated winter events.  This fund-raising weekend at the Museum benefits the Museum Club and the Discovery Squad, the winning after-school programs for children and teens. Friday, February 20, Adult fee is $5, children age 12 and under are free.  Saturday and Sunday, Adult fee is $6, children age 12 and under are free.

Description:   Vendors from throughout the Northeast display and sell gems, jewelry, minerals, lapidary equipment, fossils, and much more.  Meanwhile at the Museum, staff members conduct guided tours of the mineral and fossil exhibitions and are on hand to identify visitor's own minerals and fossils.  Afternoon lectures on the mineralogy of New York will be held.  Call 518-474-5877 for information about the times and locations.  Entrance fee is $6 for adults, children age 12 and under are free.

Time Tunnel Camp

Description:   During the winter school break, the Museum's highly acclaimed Time Tunnel day camp offers children in first through seventh grades entertaining education, hands-on enrichment, and enjoyable recreation.  Sessions meet weekdays from 9:00AM to 4:00PM.  There is a fee for this program and pre-registration is required.  For more information and registration, call 518-402-5019.
