Why is everyone using AddThis?

What is AddThis?

Launched in September 2006, AddThis is the #1 bookmarking and sharing button on the Internet. AddThis has become the standard button for bookmarking and sharing. The AddThis button spreads your content across the Web by making it easier for your visitors to bookmark and share it with other people, again... and again... and again. This simple yet powerful button is very easy to install and provides valuable Analytics about the bookmarking and sharing activity of your users. AddThis helps your visitors create a buzz for your site and increase its popularity and ranking.

Who uses AddThis?

AddThis is already on hundreds of thousands of websites including TIME Magazine, Oracle, Freewebs, Entertainment Weekly, Topix, MapQuest, Lonely Planet, MySpace, PGA Tour, Tower Records, Squidoo, Zappos, Funny or Die, FOX, ABC, CBS, Glamour, PostSecret, WebMD, American Idol, ReadWriteWeb, just to name a few. Each month our button is displayed across the web 20 billion times.

Is AddThis Free?

Yep! The features you see today on AddThis will always be free. We will soon provide additional premium services for those who need more from AddThis.

What blogging platforms do you support?

We currently support TypePad, Blogger, and WordPress. More platforms will be supported in the future.

Will my users need to create an account?

No. Once you add our button to your site or blog, your users can immediatly start using it to bookmark and share your content. They do not need to create an account with AddThis to do that.

Can I customize the button, dropdown, or popup?

Absolutely. We understand that our button does not necessarily fit the look and feel of all websites. So you are welcome to provide your own image, or assign styles to your link. Additionally you can customize the dropdown and popup by adding your company name and logo. You can even change the list (and order) of service options (e.g. Digg, Del.icio.us, Facebook, etc). Please refer to the customization documentation for more information. By the way, 'Email a Friend' is also an option if you want to provide it to your users.

Where should I place the button on my web pages...any advice?

This is really up to you. But it's better to place the button in a visible spot (e.g. the top portion of the page). The more visible the button is the more people will bookmark and share your content; which of course means more buzz, and more traffic back to your site.

Do you have a secure version of the widget (https)?

Yes. In the code of the widget, just replace this http://s7.addthis.com or http://s5.addthis.com — with this: https://secure.addthis.com/.

Why do my bookmarks open in the sidebar, with Firefox?

If you use Firefox and bookmark a page with the AddThis button ('Favorites' option), when you later open that bookmark, the page opens in the sidebar instead of the main window. This is a well-known Firefox bug. We have no control over it, unfortunately.

Why does the button dropdown sometimes appears under Flash objects?

Flash objects often conflict with other HTML elements, this is a common problem. To avoid these conflicts be sure to set the "wmode" attribute to "transparent" in all your <embed /> tags. For example: <embed wmode="transparent" ... />. Also, the latest version of the button temporarily hides Flash objects that intersect with the dropdown, when opened. If you want to disable this behavior, just set the addthis_hide_embed property to false, like this: addthis_hide_embed = false;

Why is the AddThis widget loading a Flash file?

We are currently loading a Flash file to measure our traffic and count the number of unique users of the widget, in an effort to more accurately report data to our publishers and developers in the future.

When posting to Facebook, how can I control which image shows as the preview?

You can learn how on this page: http://www.facebook.com/share_partners.php (be sure to click the link "How do I make sure the Share Preview works?").

Do you support other languages?

Yes, please refer to our customization page.
