About Industry Statistics

For over thirty years and as the leading trade association representing the U.S. publishing industry, the Association of American Publishers research, develop and share with its membership, investors community, and to the public, trends and analysis of publishing sales in the consumer, el-hi, professional journals and books, and higher ed markets, to track the growth of book publishing domestically and worldwide for all arms that comprise the book publishing market.

As a foundation of service to the industry-at-large, the AAP analyzes factual data supplied by the leading book publishing media conglomerates from around the world. Statistics are utilized and available for AAP members for publishers' annual reports and act as a resource illustrating growth trends in the book market.

AAP Statistics Program Consist of the Following Comprehensive Reports:

1) Monthly Reports tracking:  Adult Hardcover, Adult Paperback, Adult Mass Market, Children's/YA Hardcover; Children's/YA Paperback; Audio Books, Electronic Books; Religious Books, Higher education, University Press Hardcover, University Press Paperback, Total Professional, El-Hi Basal (Adoption/Non-Adoption), and El-Hi Supplemental (Adoption/Non-Adoption).

2) Annual Reports in Four categories:  Consumer Books & Materials, El-Hi Books and Materials, Higher Education Books and Materials; and Professional Journals.(Annual Reports are available only for purchase).

3) S1 - An estimate of total domestic book sales in the United States.  This report is based on the US Census Bureaus 2002 Economic Census extrapolated using the AAP Monthly survey of publishers and other available data.
