FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can I get my work published?

The AAP does not publish books, however, there are a few resources that may be of some help in your search for a publisher:

How to Get Happily Published: A Complete and Candid Guide

by Judith Appelbaum provides an overview of the publishing industry and how to break into it.

Writer’s Guide to Book Editors, Publishers and Literary Agents

by Jeff Herman provides a great deal of information concerning contacting publishers and agents.

The Literary Market Place

(www.literarymarketplace.com) contains a list of publishers, editors, and literary agents, along with contact information.

Does the AAP sell or publish a list of member companies?

No, the AAP does not give out its list of members, the only list available is located at the member companies tab on the homepage of the website.

Does the AAP have a listing of U.S. publishing companies?

No, the AAP does not have a list of U.S. publishing companies. The Literary Market Place has a comprehensive list of publishers.

If you are looking for contact information for a specific publisher, please try the Internet or directory assistance, as the AAP does not have this information.

Does the AAP have ISBN information?

The AAP does not have specific ISBN numbers for books. However, we do have information about the change to 13 digit ISBN numbers located at http://www.publishers.org/isbm_13

Does the AAP track any statistics other than what is on the website?

No, the Industry Statistics located on the homepage are the only ones that the AAP tracks. If you have specific questions about the information, contact Tina Jordan at tjordan@publishers.org

The Bowker Annual is a good source for further facts and figures for the publishing industry.

Can the AAP help my company with a book donation initiative?

Yes, the AAP has a portion of the website dedicated to book donations located at The Book Donation Initiative. The company must be a non-profit and must show proof of its status with IRS documentation. Please contact Deidre Huntington at dhuntington@publishers.org to get more information about book donations.

Can my company post a job opening on the AAP website?

Yes, Bookjobs.com is the AAP’s resource for those looking for jobs in the publishing industry, as well as for employers looking for new hires. Please contact Marlene Scheuermann at mscheuermann@publishers.org for more information on how to post a job on the website.

What do I do if a publication I have produced is being pirated overseas?

AAP is happy to receive notification of piracy in any market worldwide.  Although AAP actions are normally limited to situations affecting a large number of publishers at a time, knowing about individual instances of piracy is helpful in informing our efforts, and could lead to further AAP action.  AAP staff are also happy to direct you to resources that may be helpful to you in approaching the problem individually.  For further information or to report a problem, please contact Emilia Varga-West at evargawest@publishers.org.
