Biweekly Family Newsletter

DEC's new electronic newsletter, "DEC Outdoor Discovery," encourages New Yorkers to explore the outdoors and learn about the environment. Each issue introduces subscribers to a seasonal environmental or nature topic, suggests a related activity, and lists family-friendly events at DEC's environmental education centers. Upcoming issues will include events and activities about birding, salamanders and frogs, and young wildlife.

DEC Outdoor Discovery will be emailed to subscribers every other Wednesday afternoon, and will also appear on the DEC website. Don't miss an issue--subscribe today!

We Want to Hear from You

We hope you enjoy DEC Outdoor Discovery. We would appreciate your feedback -- what you like about it, and what you would like to see in future issues. We would also like to know if you have other suggestions or are having any display problems with the email that you have received. Please send all comments to outdoor@gw.dec.state.ny.us and we'll use your suggestions to make improvements for future issues.

More Ways to Connect with Nature

If you are interested in learning more about the environment, check out DEC's award-winning outdoor magazine, the Conservationist. Each issue contains informative, interesting and beautifully illustrated articles.

Also check out Conservationist for Kids, the nature and environment magazine for kids in New York State. Written for students at or around fourth-grade level, this new publication is published three times annually and sent to fourth-grade classes in public schools. The magazine contains information and activities that encourage youngsters to get out there and enjoy the outdoors.

It's not too soon to think about plans for next summer. DEC runs four summer environmental education camps for youth ages 12-14 and one for youth ages 15-17. The week-long overnight camps are located in the Adirondacks, Catskills and Western NY. The camps are a great way to connect our children with the natural world around them. For more information visit the Environmental Education Camps web page or email camps at edcamps@gw.dec.state.ny.us.
