Central UP Sm Sawmill Project
This ongoing project is focused on improving markets for small, independent sawmill operators. Several sawmill operators, agency representatives and MSU Extension staff are involved.
A feasibility was completed in July 2004 which indicates that the potential exists for a viable concentration yard business. Such an enterprise would accumulate quality, sawn hardwood products and market them. The concentration yard could incorporate drying and secondary processing before marketing. A summary of the study is available by clicking the link above. For a copy of the study, including basic business plans, contact the Alger County MSU Extension office.
Training programs in hardwood lumber grading and sawing hardwood for grade were offered in January and April at the Michigan Technological University Ford Forestry Center in Alberta. Additional trainings were offered at Bell Forest Products, INc. in Ishpeming. These trainigs were supported by a grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Other sponsors included Northern Michigan University, Bell Forest Products, Inc., Wood Mizer, Inc., Besse Forest Products, and Erickson Lumber.
Bell Forest Products, Inc. of Ishpeming has announced that it will purchase sawn hardwood products from small producers. For details, click the link below:
