New Farm Foundation Report:  The 30-Year Challenge

On Dec. 4, Farm Foundation released a new report outlining major challenges and issues agriculture will confront in providing food, fiber and energy to a growing world over the next 30 years. The report was released at the Food and Agriculture Policy Summit--three days of programs on the wide range of domestic and global issues facing the food system, agriculture and rural regions. The Dec. 2-4 Summit in Washington D.C. was a collaboration of Farm Foundation and Farm Journal Media.  Events include:

• The Dec. 4 Farm Foundation conference, The 30-Year Challenge: Agriculture's Strategic Role: Feeding and Fueling a Growing World. It will began with release of the new Farm Foundation report of the same name. 

"A Conversation with the Secretaries": On Dec. 3, seven former Secretaries of Agriculture offered their perspectives on the challenges facing agricultlure today. 

• On Dec. 2-3, Farm Journal examined agricultural policy issues in the conference: What Will Change Bring? Impacts of a New Congress and Administration in the New Era of Agriculture.

Food Deserts:  Health issues associated with poor diets have led to concerns that some areas have become food deserts due to lack of access to affordable and nutritious food

PREISM Workshop: Research focused on the economics of invasive species management was the focus of this October conference.
Transition to a Bioeconomy: Environmental and Rural Development ImpactsMore than 90 representatives from industry, goverment and academia examined how the evolving bioeconomy may impact domestic and global land use, water quality or jobs and local economies at this Oct. 15-16 conference.

What's Driving Food Prices?  This Farm Foundation report examines the factors influencing today's food prices.

Farm Foundation Forums
Forums are an opportunity for stakeholders with an interest in agriculture, food and rural issues and policies to gain information and exchange ideas. 

 


Ethanol - The article, "Golden image of corn-based ethanol shows some erosion," authored by Sue Kirchhoff in the Aug. 21, 2008 edition of USA Today, examines issues facing the U.S. ethanol industry today. Sources cited in the article include the Farm Foundation report, What's Driving Food Prices?.
 
Rural-Urban Relations - Agricultural journalists worldwide are challenged by the increasing number and diversity of rural-urban issues evolving today. An article in a recent issue of the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists IFAJ eNews, co-authored by Jim Evansof the University of Illinois and Owen Roberts of the University of Guelph,cites more than 100 rural-urban issues.
 



Current capacity of the U.S.'s 167 ethanol biorefineries is 9.9 billion gallons per year. Completion of 35 new plants and expansion of 7 others will increase that capacity by 3.6 billion gallons.  In May 2008, RFA estimated ethanol demand/use at 616,000 barrels per day or 801.8 million gallons.
