|  The European Cultivated Potato Database - a resource for potato breeders, scientists and farmers.
WELCOME to the revised database which now allows contributors to edit and enter data online via a password link, and contains a number of new facilities for visitors:
Pedigree: click on the [pedigree] link (below the variety name) to display the known parentage of a variety over several generations,
Parents: click on the [parents] link to display the characteristics of the variety compared with those of its parents,
Breeders: a new entry in the 'Indexes' menu enables a search for varieties produced by specific breeders to be made.
Guidance on how to search is available from the 'Help' menu.

|  A meeting of ECPGR potato group took place in Edinburgh on the 5th December.
One outcome was that four contributors were identified to trial the system for two months to check for reliabilty. When this testing is complete, all contributors will be issued with a unique password
When contributor updating is completed, analysis for variety conflicts will then start with the possibilty of using SSR technology for resolution.
At the same time, work on identifying core collections for each maintainer will be initiated |
 The European Cultivated Potato Database (ECPD) is an online database of potato varieties. The information that it contains can be searched by variety name, or by selecting one or more required characteristics. The information is indexed by variety, character, country of origin and contributor. There is a facility to select a variety and to find similar varieties based upon botanical characteristics. ECPD is the result of collaboration between participants in 8 European Union countries and 5 East European Countries and is intended to be a source of information on varieties maintained by them. Within the database all observations are attributed to their source. |
 ECPGR is a collaborative programme among most European countries aimed at ensuring the long-term conservation and facilitating the increased utilization of plant genetic resourses in Europe. |

|  A database for wild species, containing passport and evaluation data, has been created by the Centre for Genetic Resources (CGN), Plant Research International, The Netherlands and can be found at :

The two databases will identify cultivars and wild species with specific, desirable characteristics for use either in breeding or in commercial production. It will also allow users to find the collection in which a cultivar/wild species is maintained and establish health status.

 The Database will be maintained and updated by SASA within the framework of the European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources(ECPGR) which is coordinated by Bioversity International. A potato working group has been established under the Chairmanship of Roel Hoekstra, CGN.
