Description: The fir decay equation for Oregon and Washington was used to predict stem decay in 12 grand fir (Abies grandis (Dougl. ex D. Don) Lindl.) stands in the Clearwater region of northern Idaho. These 12 stands represented a range in geographic and stand characteristic variation. All 12 observed decay percentages were within their associated 95-percent prediction intervals. We therefore concluded that the fir decay equation for Oregon and Washington can be used to estimate stem decay in 40- to 90-year-old grand fir stands in the Clearwater region. Information also is presented on decay biology, hazard-rating techniques, and stand management recommendations.
Keywords: Heartrot, grand fir, decay, hazard rating.
