Description: Large amounts of logging residue are generated each year in timber harvest operations in old-growth forests in the Douglas-fir region of western Washington and western Oregon. Economic availability of each piece, however, depends on its size, condition, location, and on the existence of markets, with an adequate price to cover costs. An estimated 185.8 million cubic feet of logging residue were found to have a positive conversion value in 1970. Lack of utilization is considered due to numerous technical inefficiencies and market imperfections such as low volumes per acre, lack of local markets, general market instability, and problems of setting specifications, scaling, and pricing.
