Description: Douglas fir, the most abundant and most used lumber species in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, is being pulped on a commercial scale by the sulfate and soda processes. The markets for unbleached pulps are limited, and there has been much speculation as to the possibilities of developing pulping processes whereby the enormous quantities of otherwise unutilized Douglas fir can economically be converted into a bleached pulp or paper, with extensive markets. Experiments have been carried on for a number of years with this end in view both by pulp companies within the region and by the United States Forest Products Laboratory, at Madison, Wis.
