AAP, Borders, Las Comadres Announce 2009 Titles for National Latino Book Club

Tuesday, December 2, 2008 

Las Comadres, the national Latino organization, in cooperation with the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and Borders®, has announced its titles for the 2009 Las Comadres and Friends National Latino Book Club. Officially launched in June, the book club meets monthly at select Borders stores nationwide to discuss English-language works written by Latino authors.

Medical Publishers Donate Books to Aid First OB/GYN Residency in Afghanistan

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 

Publishers joined with physicians Kathy and Scott Deasy of HOPE Worldwide, providing medical resources to OB/GYN fellows at their residency program in Afghanistan. The more than 300 donated books will be used by physicians training in women’s health at the Malalai Hostpital at the Kabul University Medical School. The HOPE Worldwide effort has established the first-ever OB/GYN residency program in Afghanistan.

Random House’s Ann Weinerman to Chair AAP’s Diversity, Recruit & Retain Effort

The Association of American Publishers announced today thatAnn Weinerman, Manager of Training and Employee Development for Random House,Inc. will chair the AAP Diversity, Recruit & Retain Committee. She succeeds Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Bridget Marmion, now chair of the AAP Trade Executive Committee.

AAP Reports Publishing Sales for Month of September

Book sales tracked by the Association of American Publishers (AAP) for the month of September decreased by 2.0 percent at $1.062 billion and were down by 1.5 percent for the year.

College Costs Continue to Outpace Textbook Spending

Wednesday, October 29, 2008 

Association of American Publishers (AAP) President and Chief Executive Officer Patricia Schroeder issued the following statement regarding the College Board’s 2008 Trends in College Pricing report. According to the report, college costs continue to rise, while textbooks and supplies, as a percentage of total college costs, have remained steady at about 5 percent for the average in-state, four-year student.  Textbooks, alone, equal about 4 percent.

Authors, Publishers, and Google Reach Landmark Settlement

Copyright Accord Would Make Millions More Books Available Online

 

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

The Authors Guild, the Association of American Publishers (AAP), and Google today announced a groundbreaking settlement agreement on behalf of a broad class of authors and publishers worldwide that would expand online access to millions of in-copyright books and other written materials in the U.S. from the collections of a number of major U.S. libraries participating in Google Book Search.

AAP Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division Launches 2008 PROSE Awards

Publishers Cheer House Passage of Libel Tourism Legislation

The Association of American Publishers cheered   the passage of legislation by the U.S. House of Representatives late Saturday that would make it harder for “libel tourists” to threaten American authors and publishers with foreign libel suits aimed at undermining their First Amendment rights.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Bridget Marmion to Chair

AAP Trade Publishing Executive Committee

Friday, September 26, 2008 

The Association of American Publishers announced today that Bridget Marmion, Senior Vice President and Director of Marketing of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Trade & Reference Division, will take over the chair of the AAP Trade Publishers Executive Committee. Ms. Marmion succeeds industry veteran Bob Miller, President of HarperStudio, who has chaired the Committee since 2002. The Committee, comprising senior level industry executives, guides AAP’s work as it intersects trade publishing interests.
