Awcomin Marsh, Rye, NHAwcomin Salt Marsh a Thriving Habitat Again
The fish and birds came flocking back to the marsh as if someone had put up a "Free Food" sign that only they could read.  After more than 60 years of being a virtual wasteland of overgrown weeds and mosquito larvae, the 30-acre Awcomin Salt Marsh has been reborn.


Local Council Lands $1.6 Million NASA Grant
A $1.6 million grant has been awarded to the NRCS North Olympic Peninsula Resource Conservation & Development Council (NOP RC&D), to develop and test a user network for a stream flow forecasting model developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

This Strategic Plan sets the direction for NRCS and describes our conservation priorities and goals. Bold, forward-looking, and far-reaching, this plan challenges us to reformulate some past approaches and develop and adopt new approaches. This plan will guide NRCS in implementing key overarching strategies, managing agency business lines, meeting customer needs, and developing and strengthening capacity to achieve our mission goals.

 


California pasture in springUSDA Provides More Than $70 Million To Protect Farm and Ranch Lands
More than $70 million is available to protect agricultural land in 50 states and Puerto Rico through the Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP) in fiscal year 2006. NRCS is seeking proposals by May 11, 2006 from State, Federally recognized tribes and local governments and non-governmental organizations interested in working together to acquire conservation easements. NRCS expects to announce final projects in June 2006.

Texas NRCS State Conservationist Dr. Larry D. Butler, was recently honored as an outstanding alumnus by the Texas Tech University Range, Wildlife & Fisheries Department.  Department Chair Dr. Ernest Fish presented Dr. Butler with a plaque for his achievements in providing leadership in the preservation and conservation of the natural resources for Texas through his distinguished service with the NRCS.


Texas Water Resources Institute Receives Environmental Award for Fort Hood Project
A division of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station has received the state's highest environmental recognition.  The Texas Water Resources Institute has been awarded a Texas Environmental Excellence Award for a range revegetation pilot project at the Army's Fort Hood military installation.
