Book Publishers Highlight Importance of Copyright,

Industry’s Innovation and Impact on U.S. Economy

AAP Participates in Capitol Hill Copyright Alliance Expo

September 24, 2008, Washington, D.C.:  The Association of American Publishers (AAP) will participate today in the second annual Copyright Alliance EXPOnential from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Senate Russell Caucus Room on Capitol Hill.

The Copyright Alliance Expo aims to illustrate the importance of copyright to our nation’s creative and economic vitality. AAP will be on hand with other Alliance members to educate Members of Congress about the need for continued and strengthened copyright protection and the impact of the copyright industries on job growth and the U.S. economy.

The AAP booth will feature five member publishers – American Chemical Society, Cengage Learning, CrossRef, McGraw-Hill, and Reed Elsevier – showcasing their educational and informational products in the digital realm.  Information will also be available about CourseSmart, a recent collaborative initiative of five higher education publishers that offers nearly 5,000 e-textbooks to students at prices up to 50 percent off the traditional text’s price.  A full description of the exhibits can be found here .

The Association of American Publishers is the national trade association of the U.S. book publishing industry. AAP’smore than300 members include most of the major commercial publishers in the United States, as well as smaller and non-profit publishers, university presses and scholarly societies.  AAP members publish hardcover and paperback books in every field, educational materials for the elementary, secondary, postsecondary, and professional markets, scholarly journals, computer software, and electronic products and services.  Defense of the freedom to read and the freedom to publish at home and abroad is among the Association’s highest priorities.

The Copyright Alliance, which is composed of organizations, trade groups, associations, and corporations with a strong reliance on copyright as an engine of creative growth, is dedicated to educating policy makers and the public about the importance of copyright.
