Research interests are focused on the biological
interactions
between trees and companion crops as they relate to the design of
agroforestry
practices. Areas of interest include Alley Cropping, Silvopasturing,
Riparian
Buffers and Forest Farming. In particular, research emphasizes the
combining
of trees and companion crops to optimize economic and environmental
benefits.

Agroforestry related projects include developing
repositories
of pecan, chestnut, and hazelnut at the Horticulture and
Agroforestry Center.
We have established cultivar trials of pecan, and chestnut to help
identify
cultivars suitable to north-central Missouri. To investigate the nut
yield and
quality potential of chestnut, an intensively managed Chinese
chestnut nut production
orchard has been established. I am also active in the Missouri Nut
Growers Association,
the Northern Nut Growers Association, and the Chestnut Growers of
America Association.

Mihaela “Ina” Cernusca earned her MBA in marketing
from the University of Missouri. Since 2002 she has been part of the
Center’s marketing research team. Her research is focused on
increasing consumer awareness towards alternative products that can be
produced in agroforestry practices, identifying market opportunities
for alternative products, conducting market research on alternative
crops and providing market information and support to landowners that
wish to establish agroforestry practices.
