FAO Releases Forests Assessment Report
FAO Report

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released its 2005 Global Forest Resource Assessment (FRA) report. The report, "Progress toward Sustainable Forest Management," covers countries around the world, including the US and Canada, and examines elements of sustainable forest management. The extent of forest resources, biological diversity, forest health and vitality, productive functions of forest resources, protective functions of forest resources, and socio-economic functions are all issues addressed in the report. Read the report and view the findings by clicking here.

USDA Announces Sign-up for up to $20 Million in Conservation Innovation Grants
Conservation Grants

December 4th, 2006, Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns announced the request for proposals for Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG). The CIG program is designed to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies. USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service administers CIG. For FY 2007, up to $20 million is available for the National CIG competition. Funds for single- or multi-year projects, not to exceed three years, will be awarded through a nationwide competitive grants process with applications accepted from all 50 States. Learn more about this program and other conservation programs by visiting the NRCS website.

Private Land Conservation in U.S. Soars
Land Trust Alliance

Growing efforts to save privately owned farms, ranches and forests from industrial and residential development now preserve about as much open space each year as is lost to sprawl, according to a report out last week. The 2005 National Land Trust Census shows private land under protective trusts and easements now total 37 million acres, a 54 percent increase from the last count in 2000. Conservation of private land from 2000 to 2005 averaged 2.6 million acres a year, according to the Land Trust Alliance. This means additional land protected each year exceeds the 2.2 million acres that USDA has estimated is converted annually to “developed land.” Read more about this and view findings by clicking here.

2007 SAF National Convention and Business of Forestry
SAF homepage

2007 National Convention Program Committee is working hard to develop an innovative program on The Business of Forestry. The Committee is seeking speakers from the banking, insurance, high tech, and natural resources retail business world to convey their unique perspectives and advice. If you know business men and women with a forestry story, convince them that we need to hear it and ask them to submit a proposal or help out and do it for them. Visit the SAF website for more information and deadlines.
