http://www.aftaweb.org/readcurrent.php

The October, 2005 issue features four stories: 1) Measurements of soil carbon beneath a shelterbelt in Nebraska help quantify their contribution to mitigating atmospheric carbon dioxide buildup; 2) Dehesa, the traditional silvopasture management system of the Iberian Peninsula and one of Europe's oldest forms of agroforestry, is declining; 3) New establishment practices improve the survival and growth of living snow fences in eastern Washington state; and 4) A new book related to forest farming gets a favorable review.

New in Agroforester's Bookshop: Edible Forest Gardens
http://www.aftaweb.org/bookshop1.php?page=55

Edible Forest Gardens, Vol. 1, Ecological Vision and Theory for Temperate Climate Permaculture provides detailed guidance on the design and management of forest gardens - an intensive version of the agroforestry practice, forest farming - in temperate regions of North America. Read a review of the new book in the October, 2005 issue of the Temperate Agroforester. As always, AFTA members can purchase the book at a substantial discount in the AFTA bookshop.

AgWeb Facilitates Internet Searching
http://www.attra.ncat.org/searchAgWeb.html

Since 2003, the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) has maintained AgWeb as the best place to begin a search for information related to sustainable agriculture and related topics worldwide. Included are links to full-text publications, bibliographies, current-awareness databases, library catalogs, online journals and search engines.

IUFRO Launches New Forestry Information Tool
http://www.gfis.net

At its recent World Congress, IUFRO launched the Global Forest Information Service (GFIS) to provide an information portal for the forestry community. Using GFIS, it is now possible to search for information about forest-related information resources, such as news, meetings and publications, through one single entry point. GFIS is a result of cooperation between IUFRO and several partners, including FAO, CIFOR, CAB International and the UNFF Secretariat.

Chestnut Growers of America
http://www.wcga.net/

Formerly known as the Western Chestnut Growers Association, the CGA represents growers primarily in the western states and provinces. There is an online directory of members, plus a list of commercial growers willing to "mentor" those who are considering planting chestnuts. ChestnutsOnLine.com is another source of information for new and potential growers.

New Web Domain for Northern Nut Growers
http://www.northernnutgrowers.org/

Since 1910, the Northern Nut Growers Association (NNGA) has been a forum for information sharing among people interested in growing nut trees. The group's members include farmers, amateur and commercial nut growers, educators, scientists, nursery growers, and foresters. Their website is a comprehensive resource for information on all of the commercial nut trees grown in North America, including species commonly used in agroforestry such as black walnut and pecan.

Group Offers Farm Bill Forum Talking Points
http://www.cfra.org/farmbill_forums.htm

The Center for Rural Affairs provides some "talking points" from a small farm / sustainable agriculture perspective that address all six topics related to the next Farm Bill on which USDA is currently seeking public comment. They will be of interest to anyone planning to participate in one of the Farm Bill Forums, or to submit written comments.
