Title: Fire Use Planning

Author: Leuschen, Tom; Wade, Dale; Seamon, Paula

Date: 2001

Source: Smoke Management Guide for Prescribed and Wildland Fire 2001 Edition. PMS 420-2, NFES 1279. Boise, ID: National Wildfire Coordination Group: 109-117.

Description: The success of a fire use program is in large part dependent on a solid foundation set in clear and concise planning. The planning process results in specific goals and measurable objectives for fire application, provides a means of setting priorities, and establishes a mechanism for evaluating and refining the process to meet the desired future condition. It is an ongoing process, beginning months or even years in advance of actual fire use, with plans becoming increasingly specific as the day of the burn approaches. Although details differ between fire practitioners, the general planning process is essentially the same.
