Research Interests

My research relates primarily to potato pest management. Recent research studies have  included: 1) the biology and ecology of aphid vectors of potato viruses, 2) epidemiology and control of potato leafroll virus and potato virus Y in seed potato production; 3) use of wild potato germplasm in development of breeding lines with resistance to i) green peach aphid, ii) potato aphid, iii) Potato leafroll virus, and iv) Potato virus Y; 4) potato fungicides on entomophthoran pathogens of green peach aphid, 5) reproduction and diapause strategies in Colorado potato beetle populations from different geographic regions; 6) potato leafhopper feeding behavior in response to water and soil nutrient status; and 7) biology of alfalfa weevil parasitoids.

Teaching

I teach a graduate level course, Insect Pest Management, Ent5211 and have served as the major advisor to 23 Ph.D. and 27 M.S. students.  I am co-editing with Bill Hutchison a multi-authored IPM textbook, to be published by Cambridge University Press in 2008.  The concept for this textbook is that it is to be complementary and linked to our ipmworld.umn.edu site.
