A Spanish-language outreach program that reaches Spanish-speaking Californians with monthly radio clips featuring UCCE advisors and specialists, Spanish-language mass media and social marketing campaigns, videos, curricula, online educational materials and other tools.

 

AsisTel de la UC (University of California's AsisTel)

Practical ideas and information from UCCE on a number of topics - including healthful eating, diabetes, farm safety and disaster recovery - available in Spanish and English by calling AsisTel toll-free at 1 (800) 514-4494.

    NUTRITION

    UC Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)

    Educators are trained to deliver research-based lessons on nutrition and healthy lifestyles, resource management and food safety to low-income Californians. In the program targeting adults, ethnic minorities make up 87 percent of participants; in the youth program they are 82 percent.

     

    Asian-language pamphlets on nutrition for parents and families

    Educational materials focused on helping children achieve healthy weights are available as downloads from the Web site in Korean, Hmong, Vietnamese, English and Chinese.

     

    Fit Families Novela Series: For parents who want the best for their families

    Video and print fotonovelas are designed for health professionals to discuss with parents of young children how to create healthy snacks, increase physical activity and limit TV watching.

    Brochures in Spanish and English with helpful hints that will enable parents to establish healthy eating habits in their families.

    Southeast Asian Health Promotion Project
    An ongoing collaborative project that aims to understand the barriers and obstacles to making healthy behavior changes, develop effective, culturally appropriate nutrition and health messages, materials and programs, and integrate the messages into a diabetes prevention curriculum for delivery by community workers or extenders.

     

    Nutrition on the Bookshelf
    A complete curriculum with lessons in English and Spanish available free on the Internet. The curriculum combines nutrition education with early literacy.

     

    Favorite Family Food
    Newsletters in English and Spanish with articles that inform families about good nutrition for children and offers quick and easy kid-friendly recipes. The newsletter may be downloaded free from the Internet.

     

    Resource Library

    The Resource Library offers loans of videos, books and display boards for classroom projects and events free of charge to educators in the Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito area. Many of the resources are available in English and Spanish.

     

    Food Label Tutorial
    A slide presentation in English that explains the usefulness of reading food labels. The presentation may be downloaded free from the Internet.

     

    "Fast Food High School" fotonovelas

    Fast Food High School is the title of a series of bilingual (Spanish and English) fotonovelas (similar to comic books) about themes that are important teenagers - food, personal choice and being cool. It addresses the fast food environment and its impacts on the health of families in local communities.

     

    5 A Day-Power Play!

    The California Children's 5 a Day-Power Play! Campaign encourages 9, 10 and 11-year-olds with limited resources to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables and be physically active for 60 minutes daily for better health as part of a high fiber, low fat diet and physically active lifestyle.

    The Lunch Box

    The Lunch Box is an educational program designed to assist preschool parents in packing healthy brown bag lunches for their preschool children (ages 2-6 years). Handouts for parents may be downloaded free from the Internet in Spanish and English.

     

    Central Valley Nutrition Network

    The Central Valley Nutrition Network for Healthy Active Families creates innovative partnerships to empower low-income residents of the Central Valley to adopt healthy eating and physical activity patterns as part of a healthy lifestyle. The Network operates in Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, and Tulare counties.

    Culture and Parenting

    A 26-page booklet with information for practitioners who deliver parenting curricula available for free download from the Internet. The publication provides research-based tips and checklists regarding cultural sensitivity of programs and services offered to families. Topics include communication, discipline, bonding, family structure, gender-roles, play and sleeping. 



    Let's Read Together - Leamos Juntos
    A series of workshops designed to help parents interact with their children in ways that foster early language and literacy skills. The curriculum is available in Spanish and English.

     

    Ready to Succeed Program

    A curriculum that fosters early literacy and school readiness. This program is available in English and Spanish in free workshops to Placer County parents and their children. The curriculum is also offered for sale in English and Spanish. 

     

    Off to a Good Start Program

    A curriculum that provides parents and caregivers with the tools necessary to support their child's kindergarten success and assist them in understanding their role as their child's first and foremost teacher.

     

    Money Talks

    UC Farm Safety Program

    The UC Farm Safety Program provides resources and research to prevent work-related injuries and illnesses in California agricultural workplaces.

     

    Dairy Beef: Maximizing Quality and Profits
    An online course designed to address the future of beef markets for dairy cattle. A portion of the course is designed for instructional presentations to dairy farmworkers and includes videos, PowerPoint files, quizzes and an evaluation. The trainer's CD contains materials in Spanish.

     

    Vegetable Research and Information Center

    Small Farm Center

    Provides production and marketing information to farmers not reached by traditional extension programs. A number of the resources are available in Spanish.

    COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

    Neighborhood GreenNet Project
    The Neighborhood GreenNet Project, or "Proyecto Red Verde del Vecindad," is a collaborative project aimed at engaging low-income families living in subsidized housing complexes in the City of Santa Barbara in small horticultural business startups.

     

    4-H After-school Programs

    UC Cooperative Extension in Los Angeles County works closely with the Los Angeles Unified School District's South Youth Services on an after-school enrichment program. This joint project brings the 4-H learn-by-doing experience to students at 15 underserved elementary schools.

     

    YES Project
    The 4-H Youth Experiences in Science Project (YES) brings the resources of the 4-H Youth Development Program and the Sacramento START after-school program together to strengthen science education for elementary school-aged children living in Sacramento's most economically challenged communities.

     

    On the Wild Side

    On the Wild Side is a collaborative effort to bring environmental education and an outdoor living experience to grade-school children in Sacramento County who have limited opportunity to explore wild places or sleep under the stars.
