By the Numbers 002: Tens Of Thousands Served At Disaster Recovery Centers
AUSTIN, Texas -- On September 19, 2008, just days after Texas received a federal disaster declaration for massive destruction caused by Hurricane Ike; the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) opened its first Disaster Recovery Center to provide face-to-face disaster assistance to homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered losses and damage from the storm. After more than fifty days, the opening of more than a hundred centers and tens of thousands of visits, a total of 31 centers remain open serving 12 hard-hit counties. Read more
