Texas 'Other Needs Assistance' Exceeds $1 Million Per Day

AUSTIN, Texas -- Fifty-three days following Hurricane Ike's assault on Texas, more than $64 million in Other Needs Assistance (ONA) has been awarded to residents by the State of Texas and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). "Other Needs" refers to financial assistance for disaster-related expenses other than home repair and temporary housing grants.

Amounts awarded in Texas for Hurricane Ike include:

Disaster-related grants awarded to eligible renters and homeowners include:

Applicants do not apply for ONA, but are referred by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) if the applicant does not qualify for a loan. The purpose of ONA is to provide financial assistance to individuals and families who have no applicable insurance and, when appropriate, do not qualify for an SBA loan for disaster-related expenses and serious needs. The State of Texas pays 25 percent of ONA and administers this program funded 75 percent by FEMA.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
