Montana Trees Grace Federal and State Capitols

A 78-foot subalpine fir from the Bitterroot National Forest is the 2008 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. See more on the tree, which is now on the Capitol grounds in Washington, D.C. Governor Proposes Reduced Spending To Protect State's Strong Finances

Governor Brian Schweitzer has sent a revised budget with a proposed reduction in state spending of $193 million over the 2010-2011 biennium. Calling "to keep both the budget balanced and $250 million in the savings account," Schweitzer said: "While most states are facing budget deficits and looking at having to raise taxes or cut programs, Montana, because of our conservative fiscal management, has a surplus and we aim to keep it."
