A new strategy for Oregon's forest cluster
This is a photo of the Lakeview Biomass Plant The strategy will be presented on Dec. 10 at the World Forestry Center
The goal of the strategy is to create and maintain a favorable investment climate for environmentally sensitive, socially responsible, and globally competitive forest-based businesses throughout Oregon. Developed by public and private partners, the strategy focuses on three key areas: federal forests restoration, forest cluster vitality, and the forestry workforce. At the briefing, strategy developers will discuss each focus area and recommended actions. Members of the public and interested stakeholders are invited to attend, and there will be an opportunity for feedback and discussion. The event is free, however registration is required.

Helping Fund Wildfire Protection
A photo of wildland-urban interface area in western Oregon
The Oregon Department of Forestry recently provided counties with their wildfire assessment rates on forestland for the upcoming year. These rates reflect rising firefighting costs, a restructured wildfire funding system approved by the 2007 Legislature - including a surcharge on improved lots, and payback of a one-time loan to cover deficits incurred in fighting 14 large fires over the past three years. Forest landowners and owners of one or more improved lots in forest protection districts will see these rates reflected on property tax statements they receive this fall.
