Rockwell Kent's Forgotten Landscapes To Be Discussed At
Library Lecture On October 6
Scott R. Ferris, an authority on the American artist
Rockwell Kent (1882-1971), will present an illustrated talk
about his new book Rockwell Kent's Forgotten Landscapes
(Down East Books, 1998) at the Library of Congress on
Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. in the Mumford Room, sixth floor,
Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E. Part of the
Center for the Book's "Books & Beyond" author series, the
presentation is free and open to the public.
The book includes essays by Ferris and a profile of the
artist by Ellen Pearce, Kent's granddaughter. Through 50
color and 30 black and white plates, it presents for the
first time the landscape paintings and drawings Kent gave to
the people of the Soviet Union in 1960. The landscapes
primarily are of Kent's favored places: the coast of Maine,
the Adirondack Mountains, and Greenland. Following the
dissolution of the Soviet Union, the paintings were
dispersed to museums in Russia, Armenia, and Ukraine.
Through scholarly detective work in the U.S. and abroad,
Scott Ferris tracked down the paintings, which he reunites
in the book. Ferris is currently developing a definitive
catalog of Kent's paintings and a bibliography of the
artist's entire body of work.
The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress was
established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books,
reading, and libraries. For information about its program,
